The Lutheran Cathedral, belonging to the Mikkeli Diocese of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland, is the main church of Kotka and has become the main architectural dominant of the central part of the city. Construction of Kotka’s main cathedral took only two years: it began in 1897 and was completed the following year, when it was also consecrated. The creator of the shrine was Finnish architect and engineer Josef Stenbeck, who had many wonderful churches, located in southeastern Finland. By the way, Stenbeck was the author of the largest church in the Karelian Isthmus in Primorsk for 1800 believers. It should be noted that Stenbeck built his first churches in the popular at the time Neo-Gothic style, later he shifted to Art Nouveau or Finnish National Romanticism. Kotka Lutheran Cathedral was a transitional stage in his creative work, embodying elements of both styles.

The Lutheran Cathedral, belonging to the Mikkeli Diocese of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland, is the main church of Kotka and has become the main architectural dominant of the central part of the city.
The new neo-gothic church, made of red brick, blends in quite harmoniously with the architectural appearance of the city. Like many Finnish temples, the church stands on an elevation, on a massive stone foundation, crowned by a 54-meter high steeple of a cross. At the same time in this church can accommodate more than 1,500 people.

Sights of the church
Near the church there are two monuments related to the history of Finland. In 1951 near the church was erected a monument to the fallen in the Soviet-Finnish war, and in 1962 here appeared a monument “Those who stayed in Karelia”. The monument, depicting an ordinary woman, reflects the regret of those who died in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940 and remained lying in the Karelian soil.

In 1998, to commemorate the centennial of the consecration of the church, an organ made in baroque style by the famous instrument maker Martti Portan was installed in the church. The model for the master was the organ from the German Freiberg Cathedral. Despite its young age, the organ of the church is recognized as one of the best in Finland.

Regular music concerts are held in the church, and at the end of November a full-fledged festival, the Week of Organ Music, is held.

The altarpiece “Adoration of the Magi”, depicting the infant Jesus, is painted by the Finnish artist, Professor Pekka Halonen. The majestic temple with its carved wooden interior is adorned with stained glass and rose windows. On one of the walls you can see the Ten Commandments adapted for children.

Isopuisto Landscape Park is not just the largest in Kotka (it spreads over eight hectares), but also one of the oldest. At the end of the 18th century the foundation of the future St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Orthodox Church was laid, the first trees were planted then, and gradually a real park was formed around the church. At that time it was called Konstantininpuisto, or Konstantinovsky Park, in honor of Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich. By the way, St. Nicholas Church is also considered the oldest building in the city, it is perfectly preserved to this day and even continues to operate. Near the temple installed a sculpture of an elderly woman on the bench, which, according to legend, saved the shrine from imminent destruction. The monument to Mary Purple has now become one of the park’s landmarks.

Isopuisto Landscape Park is not just the largest in Kotka (it spreads over eight hectares), but also one of the oldest.

Since the second half of the 19th century the park lands have been used for the sawmill industry. Trees and bushes were ruthlessly cut down, and on the territory of the park was placed a warehouse of lumber and partially built up. Restoration of the neglected areas began in 1888, but it was quite spontaneous. The territory was landscaped, focusing mainly on the already paved paths and alleys. Two years later the park came back to life, and in 1914 it received its modern name – Isopuisto.

The next stage of reconstruction took place in the 1960s, when a detailed project was developed, in full accordance with which the work took place. The park held a creek, arranged the children’s playground, and created a field for ball games and mini-golf. Finally, in the 1980s, the final phase of work was carried out, as a result of which Isopuisto acquired its modern appearance.

Description of the park
Isopuisto Park is designed in the best traditions of English landscape design. In its design, natural features have been taken into account and all the objects of value have been preserved. Carefully trimmed bushes depicting exotic plants and animals, perfectly smooth green lawns, stone paved paths, century-old mighty trees – modern transformations are perfectly blended into the natural landscape.

In the northern part of the park there is a small pond, which is favored by wild herrings, and in the western part there is a high rock, densely overgrown with vegetation.
The main highlight of Isopuisto Landscape Park is a huge flowerbed with over a thousand varieties of flowers. These are both local plants and exotic flowers brought to Kotka from warm countries. This combination of flowers from different climatic zones keeps the flowerbed bright and blooming throughout the warm season.

The territory of the park is decorated by several sculptural compositions. In addition to the monument to the elderly defender of St. Nicholas Church, you can see here a monument to the famous physicist A. ะก. Popov, as well as the memorial “Defenders of the Three Isthmus.

In Isopuisto come not only for contemplation, this park has long been a favorite place for recreation and active leisure of citizens and, of course, tourists. There are two playgrounds for children, a sports field, an area for walking dogs, and even a small swimming pool. On numerous lawns citizens organize picnics, play active games or just lie in the sun with a book.

A visit to the Langinkoski Imperial Fishing Lodge will appeal to all tourists, and it is not without reason that it is considered one of the main attractions of Kotka. Those who are interested in history will be pleased to visit the exhibition halls and listen to the guide’s stories, while those who like a quiet holiday in nature can stroll around the cottage, enjoying the beauty of Finnish nature. The history of this place goes back to the time of Paul I, when the monks of the Valaam Monastery received the right to fish for trout in the river Kymijoki. A small orthodox chapel, built in 1797, has remained on the shore ever since. In 1880 cesarevitch Alexander, being an avid fisherman, visited these places, was delighted with them and promised to return here one day. In 1889, under his order and supervision, Finnish architects built a summer house on the Langinkoski waterfall.

It is estimated that the emperor spent a total of seven months in Finland during his short reign. Alexander III with his wife Maria Feodorovna and children arrived in Langinkoski on a yacht, mooring at the place, which is now called Tsar’s Harbor. The family spent the summertime fishing, taking walks in the woods, picking berries and mushrooms, and the empress was able and loved to cook in the kitchen herself. After the Emperor’s death in 1894, Maria Feodorovna did not visit the summer house in Finland, which gradually fell into decay and dilapidation, especially in the post-revolutionary years. Historical household items, furniture and other property were taken out of the estate, and much of it was found only decades later. In 1933 the museum department initiated the organization of a museum, and a quarter of a century later it became a full-fledged nature reserve. As a result of restorations, careful handling, and the collection of lost items, the house and its decorations now appear as the royal couple saw it.

Langinkoski buildings
The Emperor’s Fisherman’s Hut is a two-storey log house. On the first floor there is a hall with a lounge, the Empress’s checkroom, a study and utility rooms. The second floor was occupied by the Emperor’s bedroom, children’s rooms, rooms for the guards and storerooms. The finishing of the walls is in the form of polished logs. The exquisite fireplace in the main room, designed in an original Finnish style, is a real eye-catcher. There is an interesting story behind the furniture in the bedroom of the imperial couple: after Finland gained independence the beds were taken to the summer presidential residence where they served as accommodation for guests. When the hut acquired the status of a museum, the beds were recovered and returned to their former location, along with other items of the emperors, including the silverware.

The Orthodox chapel, built by monks of the Valaam Monastery at the end of the 18th century, is considered to be the oldest building of the estate. In the summertime, divine services and prayers are held here.

The imperial memorial stone in the form of a plate fixed on a large boulder was unveiled in Langinkoski two years after the tsar’s death. In 1918 the monument was shelled, there were even attempts to blow up the slab. Traces of this patriotic vandalism have been preserved as a historical memory of this stage of Finland’s development.

The small fishermen’s hut appeared in Langinkoski in 1892. It was built by order of the emperor and was intended for three fishermen who came at the beginning of the fishing season. They spent the entire season fishing and returned home in the fall.

In addition to the active museum, the Langinkoski area attracts many visitors due to its status as a nature reserve. Its territory includes a waterfall with rapids, an arboretum with various species of trees, along which there are walking paths and bridges. All year round the entrance to the reserve is free, but to fish it is necessary to buy a license.
